deer in Jægersborg Dyrehave
Enter through the red gates near Klampenborg Station and Bakken and head toward Kirsten Piil’s spring, the natural water source around which the park was formed. Legend has it that a mysterious woman named Piil discovered the spring in 1583. The baroque 18th-century Hermitage hunting lodge and oaks three centuries old, as well as ponds, plains, monuments, and wildlife all lie in wait.
It is the deer that are emblematic of the park, with around 2,000 spread throughout its approximately 1,000 hectares (2,471 acres). Different species include fallow deer, red deer, and sika deer. The animals have adapted to the presence of people, so it is possible to see them up close, which provides some great photo opportunities (visitors may not feed the deer or come too close, however, as they must remain wild animals). Deer can be seen in most parts of the park, but it’s useful (and interesting) to note that the female red deer, the hinds, and their fawn stay in the southern part, while the stags keep to the north. They normally only mix during the mating season (the rut) in September and October.
In addition to the wealth of deer, birds, and other animals, it’s likely you’ll see other people, particularly on weekends and during the summer, as well as during the rut, which is a popular attraction. The close proximity of the park to the Technical University of Denmark and residential suburbs mean it’s a popular spot for people out running or taking in some fresh air.
There are five walking or bicycling tours within the park, passing attractions including the Hermitage Palace. The five routes are described in the Danish Nature Agency’s hiking tour leaflet no. 22, which can be picked up from stands at the entrances to the Dyrehave.
A full guide and map can also be found on the Danish Nature Agency’s website (see contact information).
